Pink glasses

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: 1 Chronicles 1-4

Scripture of the Day: Romans 8:39

Have you ever looked back to that time in your life when you have fallen in love with a person, who, sadly, happened to not be meant for you in a lifetime together? You may not remember anymore how you have felt that time, but certainly, at one point or another you have seen through pink glasses in that relationship.

When we are in love, we tend to see roses in front of our eyes. We see things about a person as being better than they really are. We see only the beautiful and positive things, being in denial of or even ignoring the negative attitude, habit or character. To us, the person is perfect and without fault.

Scientifically, the generally accepted reasoning behind it is that, dopamine, the feel-good brain chemical, is especially active when one falls in love. The height of emotions can cloud one’s judgments, overriding what is actually seen and observed.

God, however, never has pink-colored glasses on at any point in time. He always sees us exactly as we are, what we are and who we are, with a greater than 20/20 vision. He does not filter the positive things, looking past the negative. He sees us for all that we are. He knows the good, as well as the bad. Yet, He loves us just the same.

With God, there is no putting one’s best foot forward. We cannot deceive God by outward appearances and external actions. Whatever skeletons we are hiding in the closet, or stuff we have under the bed, God sees and knows. But whether we be at our best or worst self, the love of God remains the same. It is unchanged by any circumstance (Psalm 136:26).

God’s love for you and me does not depend on what we do. It is something constant and unfailing. For unlike human love, the love of God is not performance-based. It is based on his own nature and character. God, after all, is love (1 John 4:8).

Reflection: We do not have to earn God’s love. It is already bestowed upon us. It is something freely given, subject to acceptance. It cannot be lost because it is not won. It is not a prize, but a gift.

Prayer: Lord God, your love is unfathomable. It knows no bounds. It is immeasurable and endless. Thank you for your tremendous love for me. May I be able to love you as much as I could, in return. Amen.
