All things

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Psalm 82-89

Scripture of the Day: Philippians 4:10-13

Perhaps, one of the most misquoted verses in Scripture is Philippians 4:13. Many gladly proclaim that they can do all things through Christ who strengthens. When taken out of context, the verse can be taken to mean what it does not. Many hold it that this verse tells us that it does not matter what task is at hand, we can do everything. When taken alone, it can be interpreted that way. However, when one would read it in relation to the entire passage, it clearly does not mean that.

For this reason, it is extremely important to not single out a particular verse but also take into consideration the verses that come before and after it. Proper interpretation of the Scriptures calls for a thorough reading of the context based on author, to whom it is addressed, cultural background and the date or time of authorship.

Paul wrote the letter for the church in Philippi, when he was being held prisoner in Rome. It was dated to be written at the time when Nero, the most notorious emperor who had many Christians murdered, reigned.

Although he wrote the letter at a time when he was in prison, the tone of the letter was hopeful. The Roman prison is definitely not heaven. All things considered, Paul is suffering physically. Prison life is hard. Nonetheless, he did not despair despite his adversity.

In writing Philippians 4:13, Paul was declaring that he experienced how it was both to have abundance when he was free, and lack while he was in prison. Nevertheless, although the physical state that he was in changed, it does not affect his inner joy and peace. The “all things“ he was referring to are the material situation he has experienced. This was both during freedom and imprisonment.

He was stating how he is able to endure no matter which situation. He is strengthened by Christ.

Reflection: How have you reacted when presented with hardships in life? Do you, like Paul, keep your inner peace? Or do you allow turmoil to get the best of you?

Prayer: Father God, thank you that no matter what happens, I am able to have peace because of you. You are awesome! Amen.
