Intercession
Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Psalm 78-81
Scripture of the Day: 2 Corinthians 1:11
God is looking for intercessors. Even in ancient biblical times, He was already scouting from amongst His people, who would stand between the gap (Ezekiel 22:30). Standing between the gap refers to someone taking the middle position between a Holy and faultless God, and the world of imperfect man. Although he is himself imperfect, the one who stands in the gap has become so acquainted with God’s heart that he knows its melody. Knowing its melody, the intercessor becomes in tune with the heart of God.
When praying for others, the intercessor knows that God would only answer prayers that do not go against His nature. God answers the requests brought before His throne, only if they do not contradict what He has already spoken in His Word. For this reason, it is important that the one who intercedes prays the will of God for His people, according to His promises.
Perhaps, one of the greatest examples of intercession found in the bible was when Abraham stood in the gap to intercede before God concerning the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:22-33). Abraham knew that in the very heart of God, He loves His people and would forgive them. Nevertheless, His mercy would not get in the way of justice. He punishes evil and wrongdoing. When Abraham appealed to God, he appealed to God’s merciful nature. He knew that the Lord would forgive their sins even if it was His plan to pour out His wrath and punish evil.
Today, as we stand in the middle to intercede for others, may we remember the significance of praying God’s will. That means, we bring our requests to the Lord, but they should be in tune with His Word.

Reflection: As we pray for others, let us ask the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s heart to us. Praying what God has already spoken is an effective means of praying since God’s Word does not return to Him void. It is sent out to accomplish God’s will (Isaiah 55:11).
Prayer: Dear Father, I know you are looking for intercessors. Please give me a heart that seeks to stand in the gap. Enable me to pray your will in the lives of others. Amen.
