Set apart

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Psalm 72-77

Scripture of the Day: 1 John 2:15-16

Biologically, some animals change their appearance to blend to either their environment, or a group where they do not belong. A chameleon copies its surroundings to camouflage itself and ward off danger if it stands out. Meanwhile, the monarch and viceroy butterflies are different species that mimic each other in having a bright orange color which protects them from predators.

These animals have mastered the art of disguise! They are able to fuse so well within their environments making it difficult to identify them.

In this day and age, Christians, who are supposed to be set apart for God, sadly blend so easily with the world. It becomes more and more difficult to identify those who profess to be followers of Jesus Christ from those who are not. Due to the unwanted feeling of being different or an outcast, Christians have become very good in conforming to the world.

More and more Christians talk, act and think the same way as the world. They no longer strive to stand out and reflect Christ. Instead, a lot would disguise themselves with the ways of the world, so as not to be treated differently.

Nonetheless, authentic Christians should be easy to spot no matter what disguise they wear. This is because they are able to reflect the Savior whom they serve and represent. No amount of camouflage or mimicry should be able to disguise them.

Those who follow Jesus Christ are set apart for a purpose- that is, to be able to truly reflect His character and His ways into the world. This is a trademark that should be their typical identification.

Reflection: Do you try to blend in with the rest of the world, covering up your Christian identity?

Prayer: Lord, you have set me apart for your purpose. Please enable me to embrace my identity, by not being afraid to declare myself a Christian, even when it means losing validation from the world. Help me not to disguise who I really am, just so I could fit or blend into the world. Amen.
