Sunshine

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: 2 Chronicles 1-5

Scripture of the Day: 1 John 5: 11-12

Springtime is at its peak and not only are the flowers in full bloom. There’s also plentiful sunshine. The weather is still cold but the warmth of the sun sort of balances it, that if you’re not in the shade, you could actually feel that it is almost summer.

Whenever the sun shines during the non-high summer months, people rejoice. This is demonstrated by those lining up the river banks, drinking refreshments or eating ice cream, and sun bathing. People love sunshine. For this reason, the word sunshine is most often connected to joy, cheer and positivity.

Sunshine also aids in maintaining the circle of life on earth. Plants need the sun to thrive. As such, sunshine is one of their life sources. In Greek and Roman mythology, Helios and Sol are considered sun gods, respectively. They are considered deities personifying the sun and its power to give life and light.

The sun may impart life and light to the created world. Nonetheless, in itself, it is also a created entity. It bears no power on its own. However, all of the created world, including the sun, was created by and for the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is before all things (Colossians 1:16-17).

Considering this, we know how the sun aids in the maintenance of life. Nonetheless, it is the Son who is the giver of life. Therefore in our lives, however much joy and cheer it brings when the sun shines, we should better hope that in our lives, the Son shines.

Reflection: When we bathe in the sun, we soak in its warmth. We spend hours basking in its life-maintaining light. Do we also soak ourselves and bask in the life-giving light of the Son?

Prayer: Jesus Christ, Son of God, drench me with your light. May my life be filled with Sonshine. Amen.
