In light of evidence
Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: 1 Samuel 15-17
Scripture of the Day: Proverbs 14:8
Being a Christian scientist in the western world is not easy. I had been asked questions like, “Why do you believe what you believe” or told, “How could you think such stupid things are real? You’re a scientist.”
Indeed. I am a scientist. I draw conclusions in light of evidence. The more I see and study the world around me as a life scientist, however, the more convinced I become that there is someone who caused all these into being. The intricate design of this world and all the life forms that are in it, point me to someone powerful who brought everything into existence. With these evidence on hand, I get to derive my conclusions. God is Creator of all that is. Done. That would have made it easy. But on the contrary.
Because I am also a Christian. As a Christian, one’s beliefs center on one’s faith. Some consider evidence-based science to be against faith. Some even argue that evidence is the antithesis of faith. I beg to disagree. I do not believe that our super intelligent God who created us into His image and likeness, imparting His ability to think and reason, wants believers to just walk blindly in their faith. If we do, would that even be a powerful testimony of His majesty?
No, He actually made us thinking beings. In fact, the first thing He asked Adam, the first man, to do, was to name all living things. Nowadays, we call that science as taxonomy. It is a branch of biology dealing with naming and classifying organisms. Whenever I think of that, it makes me believe even more that God Himself is the author of science. It’s a bold statement to make. However, looking at the order and precision by which the world and everything in it have been made, directs me to that.
Faith and reason cannot co-exist, they say. However, the more science digs into the statements found in the bible, the more evidence surfaces to back them up. Science strengthens the factuality of the bible. Science in light of biblical evidence makes biblical history a fact, not a myth.
Why would we therefore dismiss science as evidence of our faith? We walk by faith and not by sight for the things we hope for, and yet unseen, not for the things that already are!

Reflection: How does science affect your biblical foundations and vice versa? Have you ever dismissed science as fundamental to actually proving what you believe in is real?
Prayer: Thank you Father that your creation and the way that you made them all point out to your indescribable majesty. You have given me senses to perceive facts in light of truth. I know you do not want me to walk blindly in my faith. Enable me to stand my ground in reasonable and humble ways. Amen.
