Umbrella
Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Matthew 27-28
Scripture of the Day: Psalm 3:3
In the Philippines, we do not use an umbrella exclusively for the rain. We also use an umbrella for protection against the harmful rays and heat of the sun.
When I first came to Germany, I did not bring an umbrella with me. So, I had to buy one here. Since I came, I have lost count of the umbrellas I bought. No matter where you buy, which brand, and how expensive, the umbrellas here get easily broken and upturned by the wind, even with the slightest of rains.
The Philippines is visited by monsoons, storms and heavy rains several times in a year. But I could say we have very sturdy umbrellas. No matter how high and strong the winds could be, the umbrellas do not get broken. Moreover, they are being used rain or shine. The umbrella you use as protection against the rain is the same umbrella you use to cover yourself from the sun. It is one and the same dependable umbrella that usually could last a lifetime!
Such an umbrella is what we need in life. To protect us against the storms of life, or even what would sometimes present as amazing rays of sunlight that actually pose hidden dangers when we are directly exposed, we need a reliable umbrella.
We are vulnerable to many different dangers everyday. If you are a parent, in this time and age, it is typical to feel anxious about the safety of your children. Evil lurks in just about every corner. For this reason, it is wise to arm ourselves as well as our family and loved ones with a shield from the moment we open our eyes. This shield and protection take the form of prayer.
The Lord is our shield. He protects us from daily harm. We need to implore His protection over our lives and that of our family. We need to seek a mighty shield who has the power against every form of danger. Just as an umbrella that easily breaks is a waste of time and money, worrying is not a good shield to keep our family safe. Prayer is.
Therefore, pray over your family, over your children everyday. Declare God’s protection over their lives. God is more than a sturdy and dependable umbrella. He shields us from the storm. And He calms the storm!

Reflection: Have you made it a habit and lifestyle to pray God’s protection over your family everyday? Psalm 91 would be a good start. Open your bible and start praying God’s word over your family.
Prayer: Father, you are my strength and shield. Thank you for your protection over me and my family. My children are yours. I ask that you keep them from any form of harm everyday. Amen.
