Broken vessel
Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Matthew 17-19
Scripture of the Day: Jeremiah 18:2-6
In archeological and historical museums, we would always find pots whose pieces have been excavated, found separately as archeologists dig underground, and put back together. If something is valuable, like a vase one has inherited, if it is broken, we would often try our very best to put the pieces back together. However, if a drinking glass is broken, we wouldn’t try to restore it anymore so we could use it again for drinking. We would no longer use such a broken vessel. It is unsafe since it presents the possibility of ingesting tiny bits of the glass that had been broken. We then just throw the broken glass away.
Many things in life break us. It can be a result of our personal decisions – consequences that we have to deal with due to the choices that we make in life. Nonetheless, it can also be the result of other people‘s actions towards and treatment of us. Either way, when you break, it often feels that you can never be whole again.
When Jesus suffered on the cross of calvary, His body was broken for us, as He shed His blood. Through this brokenness, He paid the price for our brokenness, and purchased our healing. Therefore, although circumstances in life may break us, we have hope that we can be restored. We are not a drinking glass that is thrown away when broken. We are priceless pottery, molded by the hands of God Himself. We are museum pieces. Being priceless, and important to Him so that we had to be purchased by the blood of His Son, how can He not put our broken pieces back together?

Reflection: If you are broken by certain circumstances in life, your value remains the same. You are still the person purchased by Jesus with His blood. You are valuable to Him, and if you allow Him, He can restore you.
Prayer: Thank you Lord for your healing and restoration. Your body has been broken for my healing and my salvation. I know that you’re the only one who can put my broken pieces back together. Amen.
