Honor your father and mother

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Deuteronomy 4-6

Scripture of the Day: Ephesians 6:2-3

Today, my parents celebrate their wedding anniversary. I have witnessed all that they had been through to get to these many years together. Just like any other parent, both my father and mother are not perfect. Nevertheless, I know that they have and are still trying all they can to be the best parents they know to be.

Even though our parents may fail in being good parents, in one way or another, we have to keep in mind how important it is in God’s eyes that we respect and honor them. God’s fifth commandment tells us to honor our father and mother. This, we need to do so that long life may be given us (Exodus 20:12). This is the first of the Lord’s commandments that comes with a promise. In the same way, Paul admonishes us to obey our parents in all things, since this is well pleasing to the Lord (Colossians 3:20).

Not all of us have amazing relationships with our parents. Nonetheless, even when that is so, we still need to honor and respect them, according to the will of God. If we want to live long in this world, and believe that God keeps His promises, this is one thing we should know in our heart to do.

Reflection: When was the last time you reached out to your parents? Remember that it pleases the Lord to know that we honor them.

Prayer: Abba, thank you for being a wonderful father to me. I am grateful that you have given me the chance to be born in this world through the parents you chose for me. Help me honor them in accordance to your will. Amen.
