The face of God

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Numbers 11-12

Scripture of the Day: Psalm 27

There exists a great chasm between God and man. It is called sin. Since a holy God cannot have anything to do with sin, somebody stands as a bridge between the holy God and the unholy man. This somebody is the Son of God who took human form to dwell amongst mankind. Being holy and divine, He is in all aspects God. Yet, having physically taken habitation in the world, has become in all attributes, also man.

He stood as a bridge between God who is in heaven, and man who is on earth. When He stretched out His arms and died, He bore upon Him the sins of man. The holy Son of God took upon Himself unholy sin. When the unholy sins of the world was cast on Him, the Son of God was momentarily forsaken by His Father who is holy (Mark 15:34) and cannot have anything to do with sin. Likewise, it was man whom He gave His life for, who nailed Him on the cross of His death. He was abandoned by man as He hang on the cross.

Therefore, the Son of God, the Son of Man, died alone, forsaken by His Father due to the sins of the world who abandoned Him to His death.

It was through His death, however, that the restoration of God’s broken relationship with man became possible. The Son of God, Jesus, gave His life as a ransom for many. He enabled man to once again approach the Father’s throne, which became unaccessible due to sin.

Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we can once more come to the Father, although in this interim, won’t be able to truly see Him yet, face to face. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, Jesus, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known (John 1:18). And He has been God’s face when He became flesh.

Therefore, until that appointed time when man can see the Father face to face and gaze at His glory, we can only truly see God, if we look to His Son – the One who bears His face. The Son of God who bears the Father’s face is also our only true access to the Father.

Reflection: Turn your eyes on Jesus. Then fix your gaze on Him. When you see Him, you also see the Father.

Prayer: The beauty of your wondrous face sweet Lord Jesus, enables me to see the Father. As I behold your glorious gaze, do not let me turn away. I want to look at you forever! Amen.
