Give Thanks
Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Exodus 13-14
Scripture of the Day: Psalm 107
If we look to the things that we want in life but that which we do not have, it would be difficult for us to be content. When we are not satisfied, there is tendency for us to murmur and complain.
When the Israelites were led by Moses out of Egypt, their grumbling stomachs made them forget the goodness of God to them. He freed them from slavery. Yet, there they were, wanting food, not being content with the manna. Their dissatisfaction made them ungrateful (Numbers 11). They were being blessed by God with heavenly food (Exodus 16) falling down from the skies daily, yet, they murmured about not having anything else to eat.
It is actually not what we have that counts, but how we count what we have. Being thankful opens our eyes to the multitude of blessings God gives us. After all, the apostle Paul wrote:
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Like the Israelites, we may not have everything we want at our disposal. We did not have meat but it is what we wanted. Nonetheless, God gives us with that which we need (Philippians 4:19, Matthew 6:31-32). He provides us with manna.
We may not have a shiny red car, but we have healthy feet to walk, and a dependable transport system in the community. We may not be studying at a well-known and prestigious university, but we have the privilege to a good education system. We may not have all the money in the world to buy whatever we want, but we have strong hands able to make a living for what we need.
What counts is not how much we have to count, but how much we count whatever we have.

Reflection: What are you most thankful in life for? Do you consider yourself blessed? Or do you feel like you are in lack of many things? Have you checked your gratefulness meter lately?
Prayer: Father, you have been providing me with all that I need in life. I thank you for all your blessings and provisions. I ask you to make me see the things I ought to be thankful for. Give me a grateful heart. Amen.
