Citizens of Heaven

Chronological One Year Bible Reading Plan: Exodus 9-12

Scripture of the Day: Philippians 3:20-21

Some people are born in one country but upon living someplace else for sometime, decide to acquire citizenship in that place through naturalization. One of the key requirements for naturalization followed in most countries is residency. One cannot apply for citizenship acquisition if he does not reside in the country where he is applying.

For expats living for a while abroad, they may have found a country they consider greener, one that presents more opportunities, or much more beautiful and wealthier than where they had been born. The challenge, however, could be, that, from time to time, they would still feel homesick and long for their native land.

Sometimes, wherever in the world we may be living, we might feel as though we are still in search for the perfect place for us to live in. One country may provide us with pleasant living conditions but it might be a place where we couldn’t bring our family with us. On the other hand, the country where our family lives may not be able to give us easier, more stable living conditions. So, making a choice could be very daunting. The truth, however is, wherever we may live on earth, we would still always long for our perfect home. That is because, we have not been originally created to live in an imperfect world. Before the world was marred by sin, the living conditions God provided were perfect (Genesis 1). Thus, since we were made to thrive in a perfect world, this world does not completely feel as a place where we belong. As God’s children, we belong in His household (Ephesians 2:19). In fact, Jesus said He has prepared a place for us in His Father’s house (John 14:2).

This earthly abode isn’t our permanent home. We feel like it is not the place where we belong because it never is. We are appointed to be homeward bound. We may pledge allegiance to the country where we are citizens of, but it is not our real home. Our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20).

Reflection: Are you looking forward to your eternal dwelling place which the Lord has prepared? Or do you feel content, when you consider life here on earth?

Prayer: Father, thank you for the eternal dwelling place that you have prepared for us. Grant us the strength and victory to overcome life’s trials and look forward to living as citizens of your heavenly kingdom. Amen.
